Amistee Air Duct Cleaning

Air ducts are the delivery mechanism for a home or businesses heating and cooling system. Many times air ducts are referred to as the "lungs" of the home, meaning they breathe air in and exhale air out. They connect to the furnace or air conditioning system and transport the conditioned air to the living or office space.

A heating and cooling system is designed to pull air from the occupied space and condition it to the desired temperature chosen by the thermostat. The way these system do this is by using air ducts. Air ducts will remove air from a space by using a "return" duct and deliver the conditioned air through a "supply" duct. Air ducts can be made up of several hundred feet of ducting snaking through a home or business.

As dust and debris accumulates in a duct system, the air that travels through can pick up those particulates and spread them throughout your home or business. As humans we are constantly producing dust. Add pets, cooking odors, renovation projects and smoking into the mix and your duct system could dirty much quicker than most. This is why the National Air Duct Cleaners Association recommends an air duct cleaning every 3-5 years.

Air ducts can be made up of a variety of materials. The most common material for air ducts is galvanized sheet metal. Other materials for air ducts could be flexible tubing called "flex ducts," fiber board duct or "insulated" or "lined" ductwork.

Why should air ducts be cleaned?

Because air ducts are pulling air from spaces and delivering the conditioned air back to those spaces, they are also sucking up any particulate or debris and pumping it back into the same space. It is not uncommon for an air duct to accumulate several pounds of dirt and debris. When these particulates enter the air ducts they may fully cycle through the system or stay lodged in the air ducts, only to come lose months or years down the roads. Debris can be made up of different types of things such as ...

  • Mold
  • Mildew
  • VOC's
  • Carpet Fibers
  • Pet Hair
  • Dead skin cells
  • Pet Dander
  • Construction Debris
  • Smoke Odor

What is an air duct cleaning?

Air duct cleaning is the service of cleaning the inside surfaces of the ductwork and restoring them back to their original state. Air ducts designed to be free and clear of dirt and debris, allowing air to pass through safely and easily.

A proper air duct cleaning as stated by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) is to accomplish "total source removal," meaning the debris should be completely removed and every piece of ducting should be cleaned.

The vacuum trucks that Amistee uses ranges between 16,000-17,000 cubic feet per minute (CFM) in suction power. That's equivalent to the suction power of 425 upright Hoover vacuums! The trucks pull all of the dirt and debris in ductwork to a collection bin inside the truck.

Amistee also uses a portable piece of equipment to clean the air duct of a home, business or large commercial building. The average CFM ranges from 2,000-5,000 for a well maintained piece of equipment.

Keep in mind, there is a range in quality and suction power of portable air duct cleaning equipment. If you choose to have your air ducts cleaned by a company that you feel while provide the best value for your money, make sure that their portable equipment is high-efficiency particulate arresting (HEPA). HEPA filters can capture 99.97% of all debris greater than .3 microns, which is the size of most bacteria.

It's important to remember that all pieces of the air duct delivery system (air ducts) must be cleaned to provide you with results.
