What is air duct cleaning?
Air ducts are the delivery system for hot and cold air in a home or business. Air ducts connect to the furnace or air conditioning system and transport the conditioned air to specific rooms.
A heating and cooling system is designed to pull air from the occupied space and condition it to the desired temperature chosen by the thermostat. Air ducts remove air from a living space by using a “return” duct and deliver conditioned air once it circulates through the furnace or air handling unit through the “supply” duct.
Air ducts are made up of a variety of metals, the most common being galvanized sheet metal. Other materials could be flexible tubing called flex ducts, fiberboard ducts, or insulated lined ductwork. Air duct systems can be made up of several hundred feet, snaking through a home or business to deliver air wherever it is intended to go.
Air duct cleaning is the service of cleaning the inside surfaces of the ductwork and restoring them back to their original state. Air ducts are designed to be free and clear of dirt and debris, allowing air to pass through safely and easily. A proper air duct cleaning as stated by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) is to accomplish “total source removal,” meaning the debris should be completely removed and every piece of ducting should be cleaned.
Why should I get my air ducts cleaned?
As air ducts pull air through your home or business, they are also sucking in any particles or debris floating with it. In fact, it’s not uncommon for duct work to accumulate several pounds of dirt and debris including, dead skin cells, pet dander and pet hair, construction debris, volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), carpet fibers, and many other things.
When these particles enter the air ducts they may fully circulate through the air duct system or stay lodged in within the ductwork, only to come loose months or years down the road.
What equipment is used during an air duct cleaning?
Amistee uses the most common and the most powerful piece of equipment for air duct cleaning, a vacuum truck. This piece of highly specialized equipment is a self-contained truck that is fully equipped with all the proper tools to clean air duct systems.
The vacuum trucks that Amistee uses ranges between 16,000-17,000 cubic feet per minute (CFM) in suction power. That’s equivalent to the suction power of 425 upright Hoover vacuums! The trucks pull all of the dirt and debris in the ductwork to a collection bin inside the truck.
Amistee also uses a portable piece of equipment to clean the air ducts of a home, business, or large commercial building. The average CFM ranges from 2,000-5,000 for a well-maintained piece of equipment.
Keep in mind, there is a range in quality and suction power of portable air duct cleaning equipment. If you choose to have your air ducts cleaned by a company that you feel while providing the best value for your money, make sure that their portable equipment is high-efficiency particulate arresting (HEPA). HEPA filters can capture 99.97% of all debris greater than .3 microns, which is the size of most bacteria.

What questions should I ask when choosing an air duct cleaning company?
Do they have any complaints on the Better Business Bureau (BBB)? Ask if they have referrals from past customers in your area or from customers who have similar duct configurations? Check to see how long they have been in business. Ask to see if the company is licensed and insured. Do other companies refer to the particular air duct cleaner? The service techs (Jake & Darren) arrived an hour early on 12/23 and went right to work after a brief walk through of our home. We moved into our home 3 weeks prior to service. Remove your vehicle from your driveway.
During the winter months, please be sure to have your driveway cleared of snow and ice.
Relocate any furry friends to a safe place inside your home.
Clear a 2-3 foot area around your furnace.
Keep the stairway leading to your unit clear of debris.
What to Expect
Your furnace/air conditioning unit will be turned off.
Our team will be moving throughout your entire home and will be checking each register.
In the winter months, please be sure to turn off all fireplaces before we service your home.
Each Amistee employee entering your home will wear protective shoe covers. We will not begin our work until your floors leading to the work area are covered and all corners are protected.
After we’ve completed our service we will provide you with before and after photos of your ductwork.
